This weekend I was utterly spoilt and was treated by my family to the most amazing lunch at the Gravetye Manor Hotel in Sussex. The drive took a while as the London to Brighton bike race was on but we made it eventually. Gravetye Manor was built in 1598 by Richard Infield for his bride to be Katharine Compton. In 1958 it was turned in to a country hotel by Peter Herbert.When you arrive you go in to this lovely old fashioned lounge where you can have a pre lunch drink and have a look at the delicious menu. On the left is the Gin and Tonic with a Grapefruit slice and on the right is the beautiful menu. There is so much choice and something for everyone.
The first thing you get it a warm bread roll and I chose the sweet onion roll. It was so lovely and light and was really tasty. On the right is the amuse bouche which was an asparagus foam with capers and an edible flower from the garden. It was an acquired taste but was very different,
For my starter I chose the asparagus with a breaded egg and béarnaise sauce. It was out of this world. I am not a huge fan of eggs and I ate every little bit the breadcrumbs were so flavoursome, the béarnaise sauce was beautifully light and the asparagus was so fresh and had just the right amount of crunch to it.For my main I had the roast beef. The meat melted in your mouth the potatoes were small but delicious. The yorkshire pudding was a little crispy for my liking but still nice. The vegetables were amazing and the carrots were flavoured with orange that really added something for me. I want to try this at home!
Dessert was a really tricky decision as they all sounded amazing. The dessert I chose was a lemon posset with meringue, fresh strawberries, fresh strawberry compote and basil jelly cubes. The basil cubes were a taste sensation they were packed full of flavour and with the lemon fitted perfectly. The strawberries were out of the garden and they had a slight tang but were so juicy and delicious. There was a chocolate fondant which I had a bite of and it was so light and fluffy but had a perfect melting middle.
To finish we had tea in the lounge and I went for a jasmine tea which was served in a beautiful round silver teapot and in these adorable teacups.It was overall an amazing meal if on the pricey side but as I said at the start I was lucky enough to be treated by family.
