Negative space

Hey everyone, this is the second post about photography techniques that are great ways to start improving your photography.  This weeks technique is all about negative space in photographs.  When I first started photography I would never have thought having space that isn’t filled would be a good idea!

If this photograph did not have the space to the left your eye would not be as drawn to the subject as it is. In my opinion negative space has to be an addition rather than a distraction.  This can be achieved with either a blurred negative space like in the photograph above or with a crisp negative space such as a blue sky or flower like in the photograph below.

I am still playing around with negative space but it’s a technique that I think every photographer should experiment with, even if it’s just once.

What do you think of this technique, I would love to hear your views below 🙂
