The other question that I got asked to write about is how do you “see” a photograph i.e. what makes a great photograph. This is quite a difficult question to ask and I have thought of the top three ways I think a great photograph is made.
1. Plan your photoshoots- as mentioned in my last post (check it out here) reading and looking at other photographers work can really help you work out what you are trying to get from your next trip out with your camera. Write down a list of photographs or style of photographs you want and think about where you can go to achieve this. Always have a notebook with you as inspiration can strike at any time.
2. Experiment- I do a lot of experimental photography I see something that is a bit different and give it a go. Sometimes this works and other times it fails. Which brings me on to my last point…..
3. Review your work- This is the biggest point for me whether the photograph is the most amazing shot you have ever taken or the worst photograph reviewing it and ripping it apart is really important. Analyse what you love about each photograph and how you could have done it better. You can always improve your work.
I personally don’t think there is a magic rule of how to see a great photograph. I believe we grow each time we take a photograph. Practise, review and time makes us better each time we pick up out camera.
